SCD in Alameda Magazine: bring style to your backyard

Sarah Coombs September 24, 2014

From my article in the latest issue of Alameda Magazine:

The same rules for designing indoors work outside, too. Make sure you have adequate lighting to enjoy [your backyard] late into the evening, but steer clear of harsh fluorescents. String lights, outdoor lanterns, and candles will create a glow that’s far more flattering. Stuck with an unwelcoming, dark corner? A large mirror will do wonders for opening up the space. And if you need a bit more color, try a few throw pillows and rugs. Just be sure to use ones fashioned from outdoor acrylics so they’re sure to last.

Want some other tips? Read on to learn more!

Pretty in pink

Sarah Coombs July 21, 2014

A new client pinned the image above, as inspiration for her young daughter's bedroom. I loved it immediately. Years ago I might not have said this. I've traditionally used pink in smaller doses, and pink walls: well, that's a whole lot of pink. But lately I've been really taken with this look.

So why do I find pink walls so appealing? Read on to find out.

As we roll into summer here in the East Bay, one thing is certain: We’ll all be spending lots of time outdoors. That makes this the perfect time to update your home’s exterior. No need to undertake a major renovation, though. Just concentrate your efforts on the entrance. A few quick changes there are enough to make the whole place feel refreshed.

How to update a traditional chair

Sarah Coombs June 24, 2014

I've been scoping out lots of dining rooms lately, doing research for some new clients. They want to incorporate their existing table and chairs in the design. It's a matched, formal set: pretty, but rather tame. So I came up with an idea to make it more lively and unique, and perfectly suited to the young family that lives in the home.

Poppin makes for a pretty workspace

Sarah Coombs June 10, 2014

I design my fair share of professional workspaces. So I'm always on the lookout for good looking office items, everything from chairs and file cabinets to paper trays and pencil cups. Last week, I came across a new vendor: Poppin. It offers shoppers a shortcut to a visually cohesive space, and with a great price point to boot.
