Perfect in plaid

Sarah Coombs February 18, 2014

A reporter asked me recently what I thought the next big trend in pattern would be. I think my answer surprised her: plaid. Yep, that same preppy, masculine, and--dare I say old-fashioned--pattern is definitely having a moment. Here's why: despite its density, it plays surprisingly well with others. It's great in a mountain cabin, of course, or a manly den. But it is also pleasingly fresh in less rugged surroundings. Unconvinced? Let me show you what I mean.

Sure, triangles are hip right now, but I say it's time to give those three cornered guys a rest. Plaid is so much more unexpected. It's earnest and steady and just a little a bit serious. That makes it a perfect counterpoint to a bohemian or feminine space, or a great match for a room that's restrained and refined.

Still a bit leery? Try a single throw pillow, a seat cover, or maybe even a lampshade. I think you'll find that In the right surroundings, plaid is anything but square.
